Our learning about seasons has focused on exploring the changes that take place during Autumn and Winter so far. We began by taking a walk to our local park to look for signs of Autumn. The children carefully observed the environment around them, noticing the changing colours of the leaves, cooler weather and fallen conkers and acorns. They collected a range of autumn treasures, which we later explored and discussed back in the classroom. This hands-on experience helped the children to develop their observation skills and deepen their understanding of the natural world.
As we moved into learning about Winter, we explored the changes we could see in our outdoor area. The children looked for signs of colder weather and had the exciting opportunity to explore ice. They investigated how it felt, what happened when it was held and how it changed over time. These discussions encouraged curiosity and introduced new vocabulary linked to temperature and seasonal change.
Throughout this topic, the children have compared Autumn and Winter, talking about similarities and differences between the seasons. They discussed how the colours in Autumn are often reds, oranges and browns, while Winter can bring whites, greys and frosty mornings. We explored how the weather changes, the types of activities we might enjoy in each season and the different clothing we need to wear to stay comfortable and safe. Through observation, discussion and exploration, children are beginning to understand that seasons change over time and that these changes affect the world we see, the things we do and how we care for ourselves. We can’t wait to learn about the seasons Spring and Summer as they fall within the year.
