Introduction to Cubs and Scouts
For Scouts, excitement and adventure are key. The Scouting Programme offers a huge variety of activities from fitness to life skills, problem solving to understanding global issues; whilst giving pupils the opportunity to be creative and get involved in their local communities. Scouts are introduced to exciting outdoor skills and take part in adventurous activities, as well as camps and residential experiences.

Structure
Children aged 9-11 (Y5 and 6) are given the opportunity to take part in our Scouting curriculum in the form of drop-down days across the academic year. On those drop-down days, they will work towards one of the scouting badges. If they are successful in achieving their badge, they receive a certificate for their efforts. The aim of our badges is to provide outdoor adventurous opportunities, as well as create links with our local community. We also offer a scouting club, who get the opportunity to work towards additional badges, as well as experience unique and exciting experiences, such as residentials and hiking in the outdoors.

Activities
During their time in Scouts pupils will get a chance to try a wide range of different activities as well as going on trips, days out, and on camps. Participation and personal development, rather than meeting set standards, is the key approach, and there are a range of badges and challenge awards that Cub Scouts can gain to recognise their achievements.

Cubs at Hillcrest Academy
At Hillcrest Academy, we have 120 pupils who take part in Cubs or Scouts. In Y5, pupils will become a member of Scouts, if they choose to do so. When pupils begin in Year 6, they once again are given the opportunity to become a member of Scouts. All children who take part in Scouting in school are provided with a Necker and a woggle to wear during their meetings. They will work towards a number of badges throughout the year, which will be decided by the pupils.
