In Florence Nightingale class (Year 5), we are focusing on the science badge because we wanted to learn different experiments. One of the experiments we completed was milk art. We put milk into a petri dish and used food colouring. Then, we put dish soap onto a cotton bud. Next, we gently dabbed it into the milk. It seemed like it turned the dye into a firework! We learnt that this happened because the soap broke down the fat in the milk so it spread out. It was really beautiful to see!
In the next experiment, we put water in the petri dish and put skittles in different colours in each corner. Then, we waited for the colour of the skittles to mix with the water. This happened because the sugar colour dissolved in the water. We were really amazed by this.
In the next experiment, we used four different liquids – water, oil, coca cola and vinegar. The materials that we used were tissue paper, wires, copper and plastic. We then dropped them all in at the same time to make it a fair test. We observed the different changes that the liquids made to the materials.
Our final experiment so far has been to do with our body. First, we learnt to check out pulse rate while resting and we had to count how many beats there were in a minute. Then, we went outside and did one lap if running. Then, we checked our pulse rate again and counted the beats. We found that the amount of beats was more when exercising than when we were resting.
We really enjoy the science badge as we get to try lots of fun experiments and we are fascinated with what we find out. We have learnt a lot too!
