In our topic Little Travellers, the children became explorers as they journeyed to discover different parts of the world. We focused on learning about hot and cold countries, comparing contrasting environments and discussing the similarities and differences between them. The children explored what the weather might be like, the types of animals that live there, the landscapes they might see and the clothing people would need to wear.
Through both fiction and non-fiction texts, the children deepened their understanding of these environments. Stories sparked their imagination, while information books helped them learn new facts and vocabulary. We also introduced simple maps, helping the children begin to understand that the world is made up of different countries and climates. They enjoyed locating places and talking about how environments can vary.
As part of this topic, we also explored Lunar New Year. The children learned about how this special celebration is marked in different communities, including the importance of family gatherings, special foods and traditions. We discussed the significance of the colour red for good luck, explored traditional clothing and discovered the excitement of lion dancing. The children enjoyed sharing their own experiences and making connections between Lunar New Year and other celebrations they have learned about.
