In our topic Let’s Celebrate, the children have enjoyed exploring a wide range of special celebrations and traditions including Diwali, Bonfire Night, Halloween, Remembrance Day, weddings, birthdays and Christmas. Through stories, discussions, role play and creative activities, they have learned about the different ways people celebrate, the foods they might eat, the clothes they might wear and the important traditions that make each celebration unique.
The children have been encouraged to talk about who celebrates these events and why they are special. They began to make comparisons, noticing similarities and differences between celebrations, such as how light is used in both Diwali and Bonfire Night, or how birthdays and weddings bring families together. These discussions helped the children to develop respect and curiosity about different cultures and communities.
A highlight of our learning linked to Bonfire Night was a visit from the fire brigade. The children were excited to see the fire engine up close and learn about the important role firefighters play in keeping us safe. They discovered more about fire safety, explored the equipment and uniform firefighters use, and even had the opportunity to sit inside the fire engine. This real-life experience brought their learning to life and helped them understand how people help us in our community. They have enjoyed sharing their own past experiences of celebrations, building confidence as they spoke about special events in their own lives and learning to listen carefully and respect the experiences of others.
