As part of our Let’s Celebrate topic, we explored birthdays and weddings in greater depth by turning our classroom learning into real-life experiences. The children took on the exciting challenge of planning and organising their own special events — a birthday party in Nursery and a wedding in Reception.

The children worked collaboratively to decide what they would need for their celebrations. They wrote shopping lists, created invitations, designed and made decorations, and carefully assigned important roles for the events. This provided meaningful opportunities for mark-making and writing for a real purpose, as well as developing teamwork and communication skills.

In preparation for the big day, the children baked and decorated cakes, talking about ingredients, measuring and following instructions. They showed wonderful creativity when decorating the classroom and took great pride in seeing their plans come to life. On the day of the celebrations, the children dressed in special outfits, embraced their roles and truly immersed themselves in the experience — celebrating together with joy and excitement. This hands-on learning supported many areas of our curriculum. Most importantly, it gave the children the opportunity to apply their learning in a meaningful context, work cooperatively, and create lasting memories together.
