Scouts is very fun because we do all types of activities. Friday was no different, we spent the day working towards our Astronautics Badge. We had the morning looking at 3 different areas of the world beyond our planet.
First, we were looking at the impact of meteorites when then collide into the earth. We used different types of rocks and simulated meteorite strikes into trays of flour, oats and sand. We could see how much dust shot up using slow-motion on iPads and compared it to videos of strikes and looking at extinction events.
Next, our group looked at equipment sent to Mars to understand more about the ‘Red Planet’. We researched the Perseverance Rover and drew up plans, detailed technical drawings of the rover – it’s much bigger than it looks!
We then looked at what astronauts need to do to eat and drink in space! We made astronaut pudding using bags and straws.
Finally, we had a debate about travelling to another planet. Would you go to another planet if you couldn’t come back home?
